Last year, somewhere in October, the speculations for Rock Werchter 2015 started. Why, you ask? Because they changed the date of the festival with one week because they could book a world class band. Students in Belgium where not amused. The date fell smack in the middle of their finals which meant they could not go to the festival. At the same time the big speculation began. For which band would you change the date?
And so also with us. Jolien and I immediately started to shout out bands: U2, Metallica, Paul Simon, Sting. All band who would bring out new albums in 2015 or announced an European tour. Also the Foo Fighters were mentioned but we could not imagine that you would change the date for them. Well, as you all know by now, the Foo Fighters was band for which they changed the date!
The Foo Fighters are a fantastic band. I have listened to their album many times the past year but to change your date for just one band. We could not imagine it. Ah well, the year passed and one great band after another was added to the line-up. This made Jolien decide to buy tickets together with her sister and friends. As soon as I heard that MUSE would come, I was also convinced and decided to buy a ticket for Sunday.
Hallelujah, what a great line-up the organization of Rock Werchter put together this year. I have got to hand it to them. This is something they do best because this is the case every year. But their luck was about to change and it started with the cancellation of Sam Smith in May due to issues with his vocal cords. Not good news and a lot of fans (especially the ladies) were not amused.
I hear you say, ‘Can happen’, and I totally agree. There is always a band which will cancel for whatever reason. It is part of the game. But no one could anticipate that Dave Grohl was going to brake his leg during a show in Sweden a week before Werchter. Everybody was in shock. And the result was… No Foo Fighters at Rock Werchter. The band for which they changed their date!
From that point it seemed that somebody had cursed Rock Werchter because the cancellations kept on going. Ben Howard, Jessie J, BADBADNOTGOOD and JD McPherson. I can only show my respect to the organisation on how they coped the all the cancellations. They found a suitable replacements for each band. Maybe not as big or high profiled but still. The time they must have put into it to make it all happen. Unfortunately it also meant that they could throw away the program books.
Nevertheless it was a great festival. The best show Jolien has seen during the festival was from Christine and the Queens. The band had unlimitless energie and together with a showballet they put down a complete show for us. All our senses were invited to party.
The whole atmosphere was amazing. The visitors were friendly. The sun was shining and only disappeared during the night. The facilities were OK and there were not a lot of queues for the restrooms. The organisation also invested in 2 beautiful new tents. The acoustics inside were perfect and they both had their own look and feel. The only downside was that you needed to be on time to see a show because as soon as the tent was full you could not enter anymore. And outside it was impossible to hear the music. Let stand enjoy the show. A tip for next year would be to place big screens outside the tent.
Our grade for Rock Werchter is an 8. Well deserved but it could have been higher due to the tents. It meant we could not see as much band as we did last time we went. Also the cancellations had a part in the grade despite the fact that this is out of their reach.
