A couple of weeks ago it was time again for us to explore our beautiful Holland. Places we need to visit before we leave in a month. This time we did not go alone but together with our dear friends, the Grefte family, from Hengelo. They are Barbara and Robert and their two children Xander and Juliette. Cuties we are going to miss a lot while we are gone and our trip to Volendam was some must needed last minute quality time.
We chose Volendam because we wanted a picture of our self in typical Dutch wardrobe. Our must do in Volendam. We started our journey through this small village with a tour. You can pick one up in the local tourist center. You will also find the Volendam museum in the same building. The entree fee is not expensive but is a great way to start in Volendam because it explains the history of the city. A section of the museum is dedicated to cigar rings, 11 million in total. A person made beautiful mosaic decorations out of them.
The tour showed us all beautiful places of Volendam. It will show you the Dike and the Visafslag but the best part is an area called the Doolhof. This is the oldest part of town and it feels like a maze. Every corner you turn will shows something new and this are really looks like a 100 years old. Half way the tour we had a really nice baked fish at the end of the dike. Make sure you do not buy your fish at one of the fish stands in the center. Just walk to the far end of the dike and you will find good quality fish! And a really nice few over the Markermeer and Volendam.
After this it was finally time for the “highlight” of the program. You can have your pictures taken in several places over town. We decided to go for Foto de Boer. It has a large photo studio on the second floor and you can choose from two backgrounds: the harbor and a Volendam interior. We chose the interior and they placed us on our spots very quickly. We were all handed over an attribute, smile and Next! It can’t get more touristic but we did not care. We laughed a lot and that the most important.
We ended the day in Lotje Wine and Dine for a nice drink, while we waited for our photo’s to develop. Sone we realized this also was the place where the New Year’s Day fire took place in 2001. An art piece on the dike reminds everybody of this day.
Volendam is worth visiting and just outside of Amsterdam. Keep in mind it is full of tourists and a bit old fashioned. But we enjoyed it a lot and it is for every age.
