To go on a trip around the world you need money. Because the more you have, the longer you can go. Of course it is partial depending on how much time you have to save and what you want to do during your trip. That is why we want to give you 5 tips to save or earn money. All of these pointers are ways we use now to achieve our goal next year.
1 The good old fashion piggy bank
Sometimes you take money from the ATM to use during a day out. After that day you will still have some cash in your wallet. Put this in your piggy bank labeled ‘I want to TRAVEL’. We do this with all our cash money we receive and after a while it can add up to several hundreds of euros. Even small bits help.
2 Take a good look at your expenses.
Every expense we make we write down in a spreadsheet. This gives you a great insight into your day to day expenses. For example, a cup of coffee at the Starbucks, a magazine at a kiosk or a night out to the cinema. A lot of expenses are impulse spending’s and eliminating these will save you a lot of money.
3 Every euro you don’t spend now is one more euro you can spend on your trip.
We have been saving for half a year now but we still did a lot fun stuff as well. A concert in spring, a big summer holiday in July and we visited a festival in August. We agreed that starting September we will not do this anymore. Because we want to leave in the summer of 2016 our departure date is less than a year away. Starting now we grade every expense we make. This is a tip Nomadic Matt gave us during one of our talks. This maybe obvious but it really works. If we grade an item we want to buy with a 7 or higher we allow ourselves to buy it. If we grade it lower we cannot buy it. This way you take a moment to realize if you really need it. A lot of our expenses were impulse expenses and this tip prevents this. Every euro you don’t spend now is one more euro you can spend on your trip.
4 Have a garage sale.
You will probably recognize this. We have a room where we store all our junk. It is filled with boxes and boxes and you cannot even step into this room. This junk is worth money! Take the time to so through your old stuff and have a garage sale or go to a jumble sale. We did this last July and we earned 160 euro’s. It is even fun to do.
5 Generate extra income.
We both love to go to festivals but it is expensive to go. How can we still go? Well, take a job during a festival. We both worked for Eventure this season and during festivals we stood behind the beverage stand. It is a lot of fun to tap beers, talk to people and in the meanwhile enjoy the great bands. You work an average of 8 hours a day so that gives you another 8 to party. We did not make a lot of money but in the end we break even or just earned a little bit. This was the ideal way to enjoy our hobby and spend no money.
We hope our tips will help you as well. We are very curious about any tips you have for us. Please share them with us. Good luck!
